Default 91' 350SD engine issues - need advice

New here, from NJ. Need advice on engine issue, and a reliable mechanic that will not gouge my money. I don't mind paying for good work though.

Some background before I describe the problem.

Car bought in summer 2002 at 90K miles. Engine failed in early 2003: crank-shaft of one cylinder broke through the engine block! Oil went out and engine froze. Got it fixed under 1 year warranty with much back-and-forth with the used car dealer in Elizabeth, NJ. Car ran OK for a while, but never felt it was good ...

Engine problems:
- heavy thumping at idle in drive
- extremely rough sounding (feels like it might break again!)
- thumping quiets down a little in park (reduced load on engine?)
- very smokey on acceleration around town; less smokey at hi-way speeds
- in general lacks power (has hard time keeping up at 65mph)
- oil consumption is high; 1 qt every 100 miles

After all these years I have still kept the car ... that may be stupid, but I want to see if it can't be fixed. I have already spent much just on insurance to keep it around, so not willing to spend too much more if it's a lost cause.

Which NJ/PA mechanic would you recommend to take a look at the problems? What can I check myself? I have most tools and am mechanically capable.

Thanks in advance!

sounds like rings worn out as it uses so much oil--have the compression checked by ANY mechanic---diesel should have relativley HIGH compression as compared to a gasoline engine---this would explain a lot of what is described in your post--
I think the glow plug port[not easy to get too] will be the spot to check compression--but i'm not an expert in repairs on the engine-- does it start up quickly?? this is another "clue" as to compression ratio. Hope that you find something else as an overhaul is quite expensive--but then you would be good for MANY MANY more miles on the diesel.
good luck
