Hi. does anyone know how to repair the light(s) that illuminate the 4 top rocker switches on the console (rear reading light, sun roof, antenna, etc) and the transmission shifter (PRND)? The parts people at the local dealer mentioned a fibre optic lead but didn't know anything else. thanks in advance.

 

<FONT face="Times New Roman, Times, serif" color=black size=6>Was just into the console on my 85 500SEC yesterday to clean up the contacts in the Becker, replace some bulbs in the heating controls and glue the laminate back down (Gorilla Glue, clamped overnightworks great by the way). The backlighting for the switches is indeed what looks like 3/32 dia fiberoptic leads that are separate from the lights that come on with the switches, but since it was working I didn't search out the source. I have the manuals on CD and will check it out tonight and see what I can find. The radio, aside from the freq display is working again but the instrument lights blew a fuse on the way to work this morning. Have some interesting problems with light wiring. WS washer don't work unless the lights are on (figure a backfeed thru the headlight washer/wiper system) the Charge Light and Low Fuel warning are in sync and get brighter with rpm. Not related to battery charging. Hi beams come on with the when washer switch is depressed, and the fog lights came on as soon as I replacedone burned out bulb regardless of what position the switch is in. The joys of 20 year old wiring and previous owner add ons.</FONT>
