Default 82 300SD turbo: help odometer not working

82 300SD turbo: odometer not working
Status: online I stupidly let this car sit for 4 or so years in humid NC... lots of corrosion on several electronic components. the speedometer works fine, but the odometer does not. I have gotten almost everything else working of consequence, but I need the odometer to work for tax and business purposes. should I remove the cluster and take it apart and clean everything, or should I replace the cluster? or is there a sending unit for the odometer that is seperate from the speedo? HELP!
thanks, John

My mechanic worked on mine. He custom made a small plastic gear for it. If you take it apart, there is a small plastic white or black gear that is probably shattered.

should I replace the cluster
the speedometer with counter can be replaced separately.
no need to replace the whole cluster.

remove your combie assembly then seperated the speedo assembly from the cluster (its the one in the middle) then remove the speedo and on the left or right side i forget whitch side there is a plastic drive gear you will see that it has poped out use a 8 mm 1/4 drive scocket to push the gear back into place you should hear it pop into place. it is a very simple repair.

Get under the dash and push the cluster out and it will easily come out not having to damage the dash trim around the cluster. Disconnect the wires on the back of the cluster carefully.
Take apart the cluster and replace the gears like the guys posted.
Very easy.
Seems like the greased used on the meter killed the plastic.
These Germans made the greatest cars.
Seems like plastic is their weaknes
