Default 600sel Transmission Problems

[align=left]Hello,

I am new to this Forum. I just bought a 1992 600sel and I am now having trans problems. The car had trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd when at full throttle(engine would bounce off rev limiter at 7k) then when I parked the car at work today no reverse, 1st gear or 2nd gear. It has 3rd and I am afraid to drive her home as I am going to tow her. I changed the filter and fluid 200 miles ago to try to fix the upshift problem but nothing changed. I noticed the fluid level is a little high and I corrected that....but no change. Any recommendations? Valve body? Thanks for your help!

Need to rebuild transmission. Consider other than a chain store such as AAMCO, rather find a local shop with either experience in MB cars or works commercial/trucks/fleets, as these shops will take the time to read the manual and follow the right steps. For me, it required a new valve body and normal bands replacement. A torque converter rebuild is a good idea also. In hindsight, I would have also spent another few hundred during the rebuild for a front pump, as mine has a whine. Expect to payalmost $4K if thepump is replaced also. Don't be disappointed if you have to take it back for another rebuild of basic parts only, if it doesn't get put together just right.

I would get a rebuilt, even my dealer does not do it any more unless they can identify the problem. I just looked up a price for my 500SEl and it was $3800 and did not even address core. I would find out where your MB dealer gets theirs. I know they useMB authorized parts like A/Compressors. I would also speak to some good indpendents

Buying a pre-rebuilt is ok also. I would stay with a MB authorized rebuilt, as any other, you would not know the conditions of the valve body, governor housing, case itself, etc. Only advantage in rebuilding vs installing a pre-rebuilt, is for about the same total $$, you usually can have more internal parts installed, where a pre-rebuilt may or may not had essential parts installed (valve body, governor springs, etc).

Either way works, I just favor the more new parts inside a rebuild of a transmission, the better, for the same price. Mostly because you do not want to have to take this thing out again.

I have a overhaul manual on the way. I am going to attempt the rebuild myself. I am not going to pull the tranny out till I read the overhaul guide....I still hope to be able to fix it in the car. The only obvious problem is the a wire is broken from the transmission overload switch. I will keep you updated on my progress.

I had kinda the same problem on my 95 S20. It had a leaking transmission line. The car had very hard shifts and wouldn't even go into reverse. I took it right away to Midas and they diagnosed it, closed up the leaking line and did a tranny flush. All costed me 300 bucks. The car now rides smooth and very powerful and reverse works too. It's good to fix problems before it's too late. Try a tranny flush and see if that works.

This is the common problem to mb s600 or sel600 when that happens rebult auto trans is the only solutions...- ive come across about 7 units and each had spent around 3.8 k ... its that or replacing new ones cost you around 15 k at dealer ... indeed the price is killing you...
