560SEC Stalling

Hi All,
Thought that I should introduce myself before I start asking questions. I purchased my first Mercedes just on twelve months ago, after growing up around them and attending car club events since I was born. My vehicle of choice is a 1988 560SEC. This car has been great to own bar one major annoying problem. I have an intermittent stalling problem. It could stall while doing 110kph (approx. 68mph) down a freeway or stop while your sitting at a set of lights. Basically it might miss a couple of times then stall, no matter how hard you press on the accelerator it wont stay running. Most of the time it will start straight away, sometimes it is very hard to start again, but will eventually go. I have looked at the fuel pump relay, even taken it out and by-passed it with a wire. Same problem. Fuel pressures seem ok. I am starting to get desperate. The problem is so intermittent that when I had it at a mechanic for over a 2 week period it didn't miss a beat. Very frustrating, plus it is starting to get dangerous when you’re in the overtaking lane, its dark, and you’re towing a boat, and it decides to stop. I have even started reading the service manuals from cover to cover, with no avail. I'm assuming it's electrical, but I don't want to replace items unnecessarily, plus it gets expensive. There seems to be no common variables between each time it stalls, it could run for over a week without problem.
If anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated.

I think you should chk your fuel tank for debris or rust.. I have a 91 560 sel with kind of the same problem.. I dont think you will be able to tell by the coloration of the fuel going into the distributor as the filter will filter out any debris that gets through.. I would chk this first..good luck
