2001 S500 New Key Question

Smart Keys can only be had from the MB regional parts centers thru the dealer. MB controls the codes, there is no way to reprogram them, E-Bay keys are good if you ruin your housing and you transfer the circuitry. The typical charge is $200 for the new style chrome remote. I dont think anyone can cut the key either!

Its probably one of the most secure systems out there. The weakest link is the ability for a MB dealership to order a replacement key (remote)from the regional MB parts depot. The parts counter was required to certify the owners identity, whichmost were doing. I heard MB has warned some that were doing a big business in remotes. The early 140 had a double bit key which was available as conventional key, valet key, and wallet key, in addition to a flip style remote. Keys were cut at one time at the dealership, but it became easier to order them with more accurate results.
