everyone keeps talking about how zippy these cars are but mine is a dog, gutless any ideas what to look for ...? 0 -60 in approx 40 seconds .seriously
it was parked for 2 years when i bought it ... 165000 miles
I changed all the fluids, oil, tranny, and diff replacing with premium full synthetic oil, and of course all new filters, shifts smoothly and no harsh shifts, no vaccum leaks that i can see ...
it starts great, even @ 0 degrees it start practically on first turn of starter, no blowby to speak of and no smoke while idling and practically no smoke when first started cold ... go figure ... any ideas what to look for ...

the diesel versions of those cars will seem sluggish to anything gasoline just about until after 60 mph.
Is the turbo spooling up and otherwise operating properly? sometimes those things kick bucket and it's back to naturally aspired diesel which was lethargic off the line and the later diesels of that era even more so since they was not really made for runing without the turbo.
does it really take about 40s to get to 60? It is possible and not unheard of, but I would like to know more for my information as I havent heard about that problem from first hand and just read about it and many was because of turbo not spooling.

YES it really does take that long and i have owned a few mercedes diesels before, so i have " some " experience with them ... 1985 190d, 1983 300sd ( which i sold a couple months ago had more zip than this ) the car is in really nice shape otherwise which is why i bought it for $1000 how can i tell if turbo is spooling it's so quiet ...even the 300sd ( which i know was working could hardly hear ...only with air cleaner off you'd notice .....
thanks for the insight

Pull the air intake off at the turbo. Try spinning the blade by hand - it should spin VERY freely. I am guessing it doesn't spin at all. Stuck from sitting
If that is true, very carefully take a screwdriver, and without bending a blade, try to get the thing to spin. I bet once you free it up all will be well.
