R500 AND TOWING
Thanks for the info, I plan to install a hitch on my '07 R350 that will be used for a bicycle rack.
Based on this thread, I plan to cut the bumper cover 4cm, and increase the size of the holes slightly prior to mounting (it seems like f this is not done, tightening the bolts could cause "sheer" stress, but I haven't seen this, so who knows).
Fixitsteve, your link has broken over time. I'm planning to purchase this hitch: http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitc...cleid=20077344
I won't need lights for a bike rack, but I'm thinking about installing a kit anyway in case I ever need to rent a trailer from the local hardware store to move something large.
Thanks for the detailed post, this will certainly save me a lot of research and installation time.

There are four bolt holes that have to be mounted to the car. They are plenty long enough (they are ovals), but they are not wide enough to provide some play in mounting. The bumper holes in the hitch are fine. The crossbar holes are the ones that need to be widened. It's not absolutely necessary (I got the hitch on without doing it), but I literally had to 'stand' on the hitch to get it into place...
Could someone with an aftermarket hitch make a quick measurement for me? I plan to get a bike rack, and the distance between the center of the hitch pin and the furthest point on the rear of the vehicle (on a horizontal plane) must not be less than 12 3/4" or it will not fit.

Ok, I overestimated my ability to widen the holes on this thing. It weighs a ton, and the steel member that connects to the crossbar is thick. I guess I'll give it a shot without widening, and see how it goes.
I read the instructions, but don't know what part of the bumper cover or pan that I need to cut. I guess I could position the hitch in place, and just see that way, but a template or schematic would have helped.

Wooderson, the cutting area is right where the triangular metal part of the hitch is. Cut the soft outer shell of the bumper, the cosmetic part.
Smokersteve, mine adjusts fine. I did have some problems at first, but found out that a hose off the regulator was loose and leaking slightly.
