CAN I RUN SOME SYMPTOMS PAST YOU TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS or experience!
2004 ml 350v6 petrol 94k
Sometimes when I turn the key the starter does not work! sometimes there's a "click" like the solenoid is trying to energize and supply power to the starter motor! but it just won't turn over.
At other times there's is no click- just turn the key and-nothing no click no turn over nothing! another time starts the first time as if no problem exists!
I just fitted a brand new battery 100 amp hours- 220 cold-cranking amps showing 12.65 volts so its not a power issue!
THINKING THERE STARTER MOTOR MIGHT BE ON THE WAY OUT however other opinions or experience of this appreciated!

Hi all just to let you know that after performing all the tests- wire continuity! power feeds! relays etc all of which proved ok, I fitted a replacement starter motor that cured the issue!
have to say there didn't look to be much wrong with the original one when i stripped it down all the brushes were fine, commutator clean, gears ok, and solenoid tripping normally so i don't know why it failed! -just glad to have it working again!.

If any of you have to do the same job be aware you will need a good fitting E-13 star socket for the bolts, a 3/8 drive socket set with adapters for 1/4 &1/2 inch sockets!
AND a lot of patience! there is VERY little room to work the bolts are well tight and only move a 16thth of a turn at a time! be prepared to get frustrated!.
