Sorry mate,
You will need to get a code reader.
Most autoparts (in the USA anyway) stores have inexpensive code readers available. Some stores will let you use it for free, some you have to buy it.
It's a handy little tool to have and for around $120 it's a great investment, as they work on most cars built after 1996 (OBDII Compliant cars that is).
As far as resetting the "check engine" light goes..... That indicates you have a problem.
If you can get your hands on a code reader, post what the code is and we'll try to walk you through fixing it.
