2016 Mercedes GL450 4Matic Braking
I have a 2016 GL450 4Matic that does not have responsive braking in comparison to the other Mercedes that I have owned. Is there an upgrade kit that does not break the bank? I know that it is a big and heavy vehicle, but the braking is poor. Pads and rotors are good. Thx
You'll have to be more specific with this braking issue. Is it that the brakes are working and you just don't like the way it feels/how long it takes to slow down? Or is there an actual mechanical issue that is causing the brakes to not perform as designed? You are correct, it is a big, heavy vehicle. It will generally take longer to slow this large massive object down compared to other Mercedes-Benz products.
Does the brake pedal feel spongy or go to the floor? Is it a hard-pedal feel or little to no travel of the pedal? What condition is the brake fluid in; is it dark/black, does it have air in the system? If you have Mercedes brand Rotors and Pads (that are allegedly in good condition) and there are no other indications of a problem with the brakes then they work as designed.
If you wanted to upgrade the system you'll probably need to get with a European Specialty shop or some sort of aftermarket/modification mechanic and request upgraded brakes, perhaps AMG. A dealership will not help you with this -- dealerships will insist that they only deal with OEM parts, they do not perform aftermarket work. Installing upgraded parts on a vehicle that did not come with said parts from the production line is considered aftermarket. Even if the parts you're upgrading to are AMG or Mercedes-Benz branded. If you're lucky you may find a parts advisor at a dealership willing to take the extra time out of his day trying to determine if AMG calipers, rotors & pads could even fit on your car without modifying anything else like the rims and tires. I know it seems like it would be a simple task to improve your brakes but with Mercedes-Benz vehicles this is not the case. These vehicles are designed and engineered meticulously by Mercedes-Benz to perform and fit a certain way.
... And to answer your question: There is no option available that is cheap. Labor on luxury or European vehicles will always be high, and the parts equally so. ESPECIALLY AMG parts.
I hope I helped. Good luck to you
