Default Transmission serv on E300 TD???????

A month ago I brought my E300TD to a foreign car mechanic to have the transmission fluid changed. While at an MB dealership having the car aligned yesterday, I happened to bring up the service I had done. The service guy said that they recommend that the car be serviced at a dealership and only the use of MB special transmission fluid be used. They flush and replace for a whopping $400.00. The guy went on to say that they will not do the service if there are metal pieces in the pan. I'm not sure where to go with this now. Is there another place I can have this service done for less money? Should I even do this or leave it alone? Please direct.

Thank YOu
