Hi everyone! I have 98 E320 with 80K miles on it, and one of the things which bother me is how the transmission switches the gears. When it swithces from 1st to 2nd gear the car is kind of pulling back and then kind of jumps forward (especially when the "S\W" switch is on "S" ) or maybe other way around...... but if the RPM does not go over 2000 it's almost not shaking (just a little bit) It really bothers me a lot, because I think that something is wrong with transmission...... My friend has a 99 CLK320 and it doesn't do this kind of "shakes".................. CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IS IT THAT BOTHERS ME SO MUCH ???
Thanx all.
Thanx all.

This is normal when the car isn't "warmed up"
First gear will take the engine up to higher rpm (about 4000) before shifting to second gear. This design helps the transmission to reach normal operating temperature faster.
Its more noticeable in S mode because W starts wtih second gear, instead of first; this helps traction in rain/snow.

as what Mio said, it must be a normal thing but you just feel a little of shifting engagement.
you were complaining of the engine too. sometimes if the engine got some problem, you might mistaken it for a transmission.
just replace the ATF first. sometimes it solves the problem... and you will change it anyway.
if the transmission is really fault, you will get a malfunction indicator lamp and a fault code is stored. (you got electronic transmission).
the oil smells like burnt or smells like a hundred dollar bill?

It does that high RPM "cold shift" to light the catalytic converters faster, not warm up the trans. Also, "shaking" during the shift isn't normal. It only takes once through the gears on mine. I live in a mild climate, but it gets into the 20s here on occasion. Still only once and no shaking.

Yes, it is only one "quick" shake........but this shake "moves" me in my seat ![Smile](https://mercedesforum.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
O "S" mode it shakes on switching from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd.....and on "W" mode (MioCLK said it starts from 2nd gear) it only on the switch from 2nd to 3rd.....

Well, it does indeed seem to be the cold start shifting.
Your car jerks once during the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts after a cold start. It doesn't shake. Is that right?
Your car revs to a higher RPM than usual when it shifts, but only when it's cold. It doesn't make strange sounds like a '65 VW that are so loud that it's driving you crazy. Is that right?
Nothing's wrong with your car.
