Default switchblade key problem. Help!

Hello,

I have a 1996 E230 (w210)with the old type switchblade key with that one circle button on it.. (the new ones were the smart keys)

SCENARIO: Someone dropped the key and it is in pieces. I tried to put it back together. It lights up (the red light) when you press the button.

PROBLEM: It does not lock/unlock the car anymore. I tried doing that synchronization thingas written on the owners manual but it still does not work.

BTW, I am located in the Philippines.

I asked the dealership and they would want to change the whole key assembly for about $500!!! Is there an alternative way?

Thanks foryour replies

Your dealer in Philippines is full of S***.

In US you can order a new key for about $130 from the dealer and they will sync the new key with your existing assembly.

not necessarily full of crap. the $500 does appear extreme, especially for switchblade design key. the US coded keys may not necessarily work with
cars in other countries as frequency triggers may require non-US supplier.

And when a 1999 E320 in Australia goes for 30grand American when you can get one here for 9grand,who knows what the dealer can charge for a Key in Subic Baydoes the key work?If you got a used key are the guts in good enough shape that you could transplant them ?we just had a member on another forum total his 96 w210 I wonder if he has the key for it still or if they crushed it along with the car.

Anyway, although some of you might think this might sound stupid, I have this alternative idea to cheaply solve the problem. I really do not care for the car's originality since it is quite old already. What concerns me is the functionality of the car.

What if??

1) In the dashboard, you know that there is a key lock/unlock switch.
2) I was thinking of getting those "keyless entry" aftermarket device.(this is thatremote controlleddevice keychain with a recieverinside the car) I was thinking if it can be wired to that switch on the dashboard to lock/unlock the car.
3) Is this possible??

From what I have heard, and I could be wrong on this one... It is the rare after-market security system that will be compatible with the W210 anti-theft measures that come built-in. I would think long and hard about allowing some alarm/audio shop mess with the circuitry of my car... You may well create more of a problem than you started with.

I am assuming that the damaged key was the only key for the car? I remember reading on one forum or another, that a member bought a junkyard key and transferred his internal components into that housing and was able to get the unit working.

Good luck.

Guys, what do you think of this?

What if I just use this aftermarket keyless entry for the car?

This seems alot cheaper than the OEM key
