2001 E CLASS 220CDi. Just had a new front O/S spring fitted and now have knocking noises from that area. Not the bushes....just recently replaced. I have noticed that the aluminium cushion plate beneath the spring has not been renewed although it was in v. poor condition. Should it have been renewed and could this cause the problem?

 

It seems like the cushion plate should be replaced. This should solve the problem. Does the noise happen when turning? I'v seen problems like this with the steering column.

 

usually the knocking or banging noise comes from the lower ball joints or the sway bar bushings or the sway bar links. your noise is most likely one of the 3 items or a combination
