Default Spreader bar for 88 300TE

I need a wheel alignment and my usual tire guy said that they need a spreader bar to do this. However, they were able to do avery satisfactory alignment for me two years ago. Is he right this time? I think he was too busy that day and that was his excuse, which is disappointing.

Does my car need a spreader bar to perform an alignment?
The car is a 1988 300TE without 4-matic.

Thanks in advance.

I recognise that a spreader bar is called for in the MB process BUT...

What is the purpose of this spreader bar? To ensure correct camber or what?

Vehicle attitude is also important.
