Remove Original MBZ Phone?

Remove Original MBZ Phone?
I have a 1994 E420 that has the factory-installed phone setup with the headset rest on the center console. Since I do not use this phone, I was considering having this accessory removed, but am a bit worried about causing other problems if I have my MBZ mechanic open up this area. Thoughts? Leave well enough alone? Remove it? Or is it possible to retrofit this to a newer cell phone setup for hands-free use? Thanks!

RE: Remove Original MBZ Phone?
Since my '95 E300D (a 124 Body, same as yours) does not have a glove box, I removed my original Mercedes Phone handset to create some additional storage space. Its a very simple 5 Min job to remove the screws and to unplug the connectors. I left the related equipment in the trunk untouched. I can still place '911 Emergency calls from the overhead controls and use the speakerphone feature to communicate.
Most people are not aware that you can make '911 emergency calls even from a Cell phone that is not activated. That's the law both in the USA, and Canada.
