Default A Reliable Brand??

I bought my e-class 200 estate auto in February 2006 and have put up 64165 careful kilometres since. main dealer service only. At the G service it needed a new ball joint ( it had been clunking for about 4 months beforehand) and this cost almost €500. After the service there was an unusual noise and whine and the parking sensors acted up, bleeping each time I braked. Back to the dealer and diagnosed with faulty steering pump and faulty parking sensor. Cost of diagnoses = €151.98 and quotation for new sensor = €240. Is this normal? I've had many cars but the only one to cost me this much was a Fiat!
The dealer's respone was interesting : " you may have got a Monday car!" - this from the salesman. The garage owner said: " you pay for advanced technology whereas cheaper brands, such as Skoda, give you 5 year old technology that is tried and tested!!!" - how about that!!! Should I rush out and buy a new Merc.?
