Default One key works the other doesn't!!

My apologies to begin with as I logged in with my husband's id but I am a complete and total girl when it comes to cars. We have a 97 E420 and have a key issue.

I dropped my key yesterday and it popped apart. Husband put it back together and now it all works fine BUT the car won't start with it. It tries, turns over but never quite starts. All other remote functions seem to work fine with the key (open doors, etc).

Here's the weird thing...his key works fine; car starts right up. We thought maybe it was some kind of synch problem and have tried every trick we can find in the manual and the internet but nothing seems to work. Please help! I don't want to fork out $200 for another stupid key.

close the car with remote, open it with remote, and try to start within 10 seconds.

if it doesn't work, the transponder on the key must got problem.

just tried it and it didn't work. What's the transponder? Is that the dirty little sob that's going to cost me as much as a cocktail ring?

(THe REAL Fastgoy143 posting now) This keyfob has part number starting 140, which one can only assume means a 140 chassis, the 93-96 S-Class. Do you (or does anyone)know if this is essentially the same keyfob, which I could then get reprogrammed? Thank you so much.
