Default I need a better CODE Reader

i have a 1997 300d with check engine light on.
I bought a cheap code reader from harbor freight. It is giving me the code P0200 and it will not erase it. Does anybody know of a code reader which can give me a more specific mercedes code. My mercedes repair manual has codes that go beyond the p0200. I says P0200 and then gives other codes that go to more specific codes.

P0200 is an OBDII On Board Diagnostic Generic code for faulty Injector circuit.

P0200 is not an MB specific code.

If your reader can read this code (I assume correctly) then that is all there is to do. A "better" reader will also give P0200 not some other code which might be more helpful.
I assume that your "simple" code reader does not have a code reset button. If this is correct then yes you need a better (and more expensive) reader with this "additional" functionality.
Maybe you have reset the code but it has come back.
Unless the cause of the fault is cleared (by replacement parts or whatever) the fault code will reappear.

The best code readers have additional functionality which captures freeze frame data that initiated the CEL and permits analysis of live data from various sensors dependent upon make/model of vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Since that is an SAE obd2 code and is not showing an isolated cylinder as being affected you need to look at the injection circuit.Fuel filter, fuel pump, etc.
Per Stu no scanner will erase a code when the condition that caused it still exists. It will just shut of the cel until it gets to the next test cycle and turns on again.
You could have one of the above,or a leaky injector,or a bad relay.Without throwing parts at it, a real time scan on the sds machine at an indie mb shop or the dealer will lead to to what could be one of several issues on a diesel.

Default RE: I need a better CODE Reader

thanks guys
My WIS repair cd shows the code (p0200)p1223; (p0200)p1475 ; (p0200)p1475 ; (p0200)p1611 ;(p0200)p1613 ; (p0200) p1614; p0200 p1617 as all posible codes if the scanner reads p0200. So i thought that if i had a better scanner it would pick up one of the specific codes that are not in parenthesis instead of the generic p0200.

Mmm.

You make a very good point.
P1XXX codes are Manufacturer specific.
You are probably correct in thinking that the P1 code is the next level of definition for the P0XXX code but I don't understand why this "additional" level doesn't display.
A code is a code and should display whether its definition is in line with common OBDII definitions or not.
However maybe the software in your scanner doesn't have the logic to support display of anything other than P0XXX codes.

Suggest you get Autozone or some other shop to read the codes for you and see whether they come up with the additional codes.

My reader supports all codes. Auterraweb.com

P is powertrain ) is sae 1 is manufacturer specific going from a P0200 which is a fuel and air circuit code to a P14 aux emission or a p16 computer output code

so no matter the P0 or P1 you are still looking down at tracking an injection circuit problem and since it did not come up po4 or po6 it narrows it down to the p0200.Real time scanner for decent money showing pulse widths etc. www.autotap.com plugs into your laptop for $199.However for an hours time on the sds at an indie shop that has one you will cut through the tracking values on a very difficult diesel setup and then you can diy the needed repairs.
