E320 Catalytic Convertor broke after 80K miles

RE: E320 Catalytic Convertor broke after 80K miles
Sucks that you spent $ on something that did not work. Go to a German car independent auto repair shop. The price quote that you got sounds expensive. Shop around. It's a standard repair and a quote can be given over the phone. Best of luck to you. My "rattle" sucks. It's annoying and sounds like a clunker when cruising up to stop lights. I hope to have this last only until next summer, then I may take action. When folks have the window rolled up in the winter.. who cares!! ha!

Can't take it anymore. Buying from RacePages after I chat with the local big muff shop. It's driving me nuts and is now embarassing at light etc... I hope that this cheaper fix works. Wish me luck.

Update... had the driver's cat replaced with OEM part. It was about 3-4 feet long. Amazing. My car starts quieter, accelerates quieter, idles quieter. What a difference. I guess that I had been living with the "loud" engine sound for so long... I got used to it. It's great that the rattle is gone but I can't believe how quiet my whole car is now. The $570 hurt a bit but it was needed and money well spent in my opinion. Happy Halloween everyone![&:]

My 1998 E320 has 79,375 miles and alrealdy start with that awful rattle from under the car. I live in Mexico, here is not illegal to get rid of the cat converter. How can I take out the remains of the brick? The scape fumes also smells really bad, I mean, not like a new car.

Hi,
If the exhaust smells bad it shows that the cat is working correctly and that in fact the fuel you are using has a lot (relatively) of sulphur in it (i.e. relatively poor quality).
If the cat rattles there is little you can do other than to replace the unit or in some instances get rid of it (or at least the contents of the cat cannister) subject to any legal implications.
Disposing of the brick within the cat is straightforward. Just cut of the end of the can and reweld. If this is done carefully you can't even see that the can has been opened since there is already a weld around the can.
I run my cars like this and they still meet all UK emission requirements with ease.
However I wouldn't try this it in California!

You are right, the gasoline in Mexico sucks, best octane grad is 91, with lots of sulphur. But my wife´s 03 ML350 (18,750 miles) doesn´t has that smelly fumes problem. I´ll get rid of the cat and tell you later.

No cat = No smell.
Can't think why your wife's car doesn't smell if the fuel is infact high sulphur content.
The smell confirms that the cat IS working. It generakl it converts S Sulphur to H2S Hydrogen Sulphide = Rotten eggs.
Mmmm.....

If it wasn't a felony to remove a cat here in the U.S. I would have done it. Instead, I had to choke on an OEM cat installed by my trusty indie mechanic. It made a difference in sound but I'd rather pay $100 to have some guy cut out the noisy cat than pay the $600 I did to put in a new one.
Best of luck to you.
