Red face E320 All electrics flickering; Alternator?

2000 E320 Estate, 140,000 miles. Tonight when driving home the speedo and all dashboard lights and the headlights began to flicker. I suspect an alternator problem. Any views on this would be gratefully received.

Has the battery been replaced at all?

Thanks for your interest. The battery was replaced two years ago. It may have been disconnected during a fuel tank removal for repair two weeks ago but the mechanic didn't ask me for the radio code after refitting the tank so maybe not.

The charging circuit needs to be tested, under lights and accessory load.
Be sure the battery connections are tight.

Thanks Roy of PelicanPparts. I've checked the voltage at the remote terminals under the bonnet (hood if you're in the USA). 13.68V and didn't vary when the engine revs were at idle and headlights, heater fan, windscreen wipers and other services were on. The battery terminals under the rear seat are in perfect condition and tight but where oh where is the circuit earthing (ground) point? Much obliged for your interest.

The earth typically goes from the low body, directly to the bell housing bolts of the transmission.
It should be on the left of the engine, oriented from the driver seated position.

The battery earth connects directly to the car body.
