Default Can i drive a 93 e300 w out an a/c compressor??

I have a 93 E300 that has 220k miles. It wouldn't start a couple of days ago, and I took it to the shop. They told me that the A/C compressor is at the end of its life and is dragging the starter down to the point that it won't turn over. They recommended replacing it. At $1200, it may not be worth it.
Question: Can they just disconnect it or something, or is the A/C compressor integral to more than just cooling the car? I don't care about the A/C, espcially for 1200 bones.
Thanks all!!

you might be able to get an AC bypass belt. they are avilable. you dont need the compressor but if its humid and wet out the window will fog and the compressor helps to defrost the window

Cool. Good info. Would my mechanic likely have that bypass belt. How much do they ususally run? I live in Salt Lake, so not humid or wet. Thanks!
