Air Mass Meter & Throttle actuator/valve

Air Mass Meter & Throttle actuator/valve
My '96 E320 has got an uneven idle, running between 500-1500 when warm. My workshop changed the petrol-return-valve which helped a bit, but the problem is not solved.
My workshop (autorized MB) now says they have to change the entire "throttle-device", which is really expensive ($3.000).
But when I look into web-sites offering spare parts, I see that there is a separate Air Mass Meter ($300) and Throttle-valve(or Actuator?) ($1.200).
Most people I ask indicate that this problem most probably is caused by weared-out air-mass-meter.
Anybody knows if this easily could be replaced by my self to see if the problem goes away?
Thanks for replies!
Cheers

RE: Air Mass Meter & Throttle actuator/valve
It is very easy to replace the Air Mass Meter in your car.
When was the last time your car had a tuneup? When was the last time fuel filter was replaced? Fuel filter is very inexpensive. Make sure your fuel filter is OK before you start replacing expensive parts.
