98 E320 instrument going dim...
Hey everybody,
My wife has a 98 E320 and her clock just started to go dim. Just the right side of her display is going dim. You can still read the clock...just. The dimness seems to bleed a little towards the center and the last digit of her mileage readout is starting to dim. Any thoughts? Thanks

It depends on how handy you are and if you are the DIY type. Yes,
there are 'pulling hooks' which are inserted in the lower corners between
the cluster and dash. The hooks can be purchased online or from the dealer.
They are not expensive. Insert the hooks at the '+/-' buttons and the 'h/m' buttons with the hook ends facing up or down. There is a mark on the factory hooks showing how far to insert. Turn the handles 90 degrees so the hook end is pointed toward the steering column and gently extract. Pull a little on one side and then a little on the other. The technique is to 'wiggle' it out about 1/4" at a time. Also, you can remove the panel under the steering column and push against the back of the cluster in stubborn cases.
If the cluster has been in place a long time it may be tight. Once out the bulbs on the back can be removed. Replacements can be had from the dealer and online sites specializing in MB parts and supplies. Someone once suggested that if you go to the trouble to pull the cluster you should replace all the bulbs as a preventive maintenance strategy. Might be a good idea since the bulbs are cheap.
BTW, the hooks are also used for pulling the headlight washers out for servicing.

Thanks Richard! Sorry for the slow reply..I was dealing with a leaking roof today. BTW, my bulb started to work again but I will file this for future use. I just removed the cluster on my '69 220D and it was the same principle. I just didn't know where to insert the hooks on her car. Thank you again
