Default 91 300E Wiring Harness fried

I ran across a 300e at a very low price but wanted to inquire about cost of repairing wiring harness feeding fuse panel under hood driver side. I've been wanted to purchase an older MB to motor around town short drive to and from work. It appears something shorted several of the wires in the harness and was wondering if entire harness could be changed out simply by unplugging old and installing working harness? Could this run me up a few grand bill or stay in the hundreds?? According to mechanic, where car is currently sitting, motor and trans worked great until wiring issue? I also noticed someone spliced some wiring from left headlight to feed right headlight not sure what else could be rigged on the car? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also know without seeing the car makes a big difference to everyone on the forum, Thanks
