Default 300 te wagon power steerin

My wagon is very hard to turn and is making a noise around the pump area .

When I opened the pump reservoir there was no fluid . I thought the fluid stick was the rear stick with the lock top? Whic shows a good level(unless this is the coolant it is red!)

So first does the pwr steering fluid get put in the reservoir I read a thread that said to remove the fluid before changing filter with a turkey baster. But I have no fluid in the filter area.before i go out and purchase a new pump can someone explain if i am correct. Thanks as always.

The noise you hear is a dry running pump.

Obviously you have a leak somewhere in your system and before you do anything I would try to locate the leak.
Most of the time it is the oil seal on the pulley of the pump, but you need to make sure.
Once you solve the leak you can start thinking how to proceed. A failing power steering pump is not so strange if the pump has never been changed. Another reason is that sometimes the belt is too tight, which also destroys the pump after a little while. So if you have to put a new pump make sure the belt is not too tight.

The stick in the back sounds like you're talking asbout the transmission fluid??
Add the fluid to the resevoir, run it to get the air out of the system and then check for leaks.
Some common leak areas.
Power steering box.
Hoses to and from the power steering pump. A lot of times the clamp will be tight but the hose will still be loose on the pipe fittings.
Let us know what you find.
