Smile 2002 E320 - how to change lamp-on period

My E320 exterior lamps (running lamps) stay on for 30 seconds after closing the last door. According to the Operator's Manual, it is a Night security illumination feature, it can be changed at the MB center. However, the dealership I went to said it can not be changed. Anybody know if this feature can be changed, and know how? Your comment is appreciated.

pretty sure you can. go to the setting with the steering wheel controls and go to lighting and you should be able to change the interior light and outside lights delay off.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the control display again, all I can see are the time setting, temperature indicator, language selection, mileage indicator and radio station selection, nothing suggesting the light settings. Even the operator's manual describing this multifunction display did not mention anything about the light. Any other places I can check?

Your dealership is dead wrong. Change dealers if they don't know something as simple as this.
Chassis 221 is absolutely correct. My 02 C230 has the identical on board computer as your 02 E320. I was just changing the time and accessed the interior and exterior lighting delays using the steering wheel buttons. It is buried under "settings" and takes a bit of messing around until they finally pop up. BTW, exterior delay can be set as low as 15 sec (and three other longer times, I believe) and it can be turned off entirely with a zero setting.
Only use the steering wheel controls. The four buttons on the left are needed and the top two buttons on the right.
It took me less than 5 minutes to change the time AND access the delay screens.
Good luck.

Thanks for confirming, gilgorm, that this light delay setting should be there, however, I checked again and I still can't see it. I tried every '+/-' combination on each setting (time, temperature, mileages display...) and I even press the 'R' to reset everything back to factory defaults but still I don't see the light delay option. I video the console settings this time, maybe you can tell me what I missed? But the video file is about 70MB in size, if you and chassis221 would like to check for me, I could sent the file to you if you provide me your email address?

Whilst I try to change this option, I have another question: is it possible we can get the audible beep when locking the car using the remote key? My is just quiet.

I have these questions because I recently bought the GLK350 and I noticed the locking behavior is different between the two (vs E320), and I like the way the GLK is behaving. Your comment is appreciated.

im not positive but i thought you could do it, i guess not then. i know on S classes you can change the light delays, and alot of other cars too. the dealer should be able to change it for you. im not positive that the 2002 E classes and later you were able to do that.

I've never owned an 02 E but it seems odd that my cheaper 02 C230 Coupe would have it when an E wouldn't. However, the Coupe was brand new in 2002 and the E was mid cycle so it may not be on your car.
Just to make sure, do you have a "settings" section where temps can be changed to Celsius or Fahrenheit, Clock can be 12 h or 24 h, etc. It is part of one of the submenus in the settings section.
In regards to your audible beep question, there is none on my car notr any setting to turn one on. Of all my MBs it has not been on any of them since an audible beep must be something relatively new. A friend just got a new C and it has an audible beep as well.
My BMW 535i has the ability to turn it on or off.
