Greetings All!

I'm considering buying a 1998 E320 wagon from a friend that has a problem that I've never encountered before: the gear shift **** is stuck/jammed in the 'R' position after having been towed by a careless tow-truck driver when it died on the road as a result of battery failure. The car won't start even with a new battery with the shift **** in this position, so I can't take it for a test drive. I've tried to move the shift **** back to 'P' or 'N' but it won't budge. Any suggestions on what could be causing this problem and how to deal with it without taking it to a mechanic?

The rod that moves up and down when you shift gears may be broken.
