Default 1998 E320 exhaust rattle. Cats going???

Hello all. In the past6 months I have noticed a rattle coming from under the car. I can really hear it when I am going really slow and I let off the gas. It sounds like it is coming from my exhaust, near the center of the car. I've been doing some research and am afraid that my cats or at least one of these could be going bad. I've also heard that the heat shield could be coming loose.

So, what are my options? Is there a "test" that I can do to see what the problem is? What could happen if I don't do anything for a while?

A buddy of mine took his cats out on his Mustang. (Of course I would NEVER do this... but I'm curious as to what negative effects doing such a thing would have on a car...)

Any and all info would help. I have heard that the cats are $$$$. Thanks in advance.[8D]

Where are you located?
Racepages.com universal oe cats 65bucks each you have them spliced in at a good muffler shop. One member on the e coast did what I told him and he was in an out for 65 plus 65 for labor.
You can always test a cat with a temp gun or thump it when cold to hear if the guts are loose and moving around.
