1997 Mercedes Benz E420
Looking to pick up and E420 because of the old reliable M119 engine. But I've read W210 aren't reliable. Is this true for an 97' E420? And if so how different is the upkeep compared to my 1993 400E which has been almost flawless? Also what are the key problem areas too look for. Or should I look at an E430 of an newer year?

 

A 97 e420 is still a 210 chassis.but yes it does have a 119 engine which if taken care of is a good engine..they were notorious for valve tap noise which the fix was installing new crossover oil tubes at the camshafts..the newer 113 engines were good engines to...again depends if it was taken care of. I'vee seen these engines get 300,000 miles on them.

 

Thanks chassis221. If the m113 is as reliable as the m119 engine then I'll look into a E430 also. I know the M119 motor in my 93 400E has been bullet proof. But what about the electrical systems on the W210 are they reliable like the W124

 

i personally think the 210 is the last of the good benzes, I always tell people if they want a benz to buy an E class from 99-2002. no common electrial problems..
