you will know by feel or look. the weight is different too.
when in doubt, droping it about 5 meters from the floor can give you a more definite result (just kidding).

I have the same headlight problem, clouded, faded, just plain ugly.
I just received the new replacement lenses from WWW.EUROPEANAUTOPARTS.NET .
They look really good, although they are not true "hella" originals. The price was pretty good-- $200 dollars for the pair, which included shipping from Florida to California.
I will use the diagram to remove and replace the lenses this weekend. Thanks for posting the diagrams, I will definately need them this weekend...

The new lenses on my 97 E420 look really good, but it took a few hours to attach the new lenses to my existing housings.
My previous lenses were really fogged up, it made the car look ten years old.
See thumbmail below.
The other problem is that DJAUTO brand lenses didn't fit exactly on the tabs on the housings.
So, three of the tabs are not fully in place on each light. It shouldn't be a problem, but we'll see.
So, in my opinion, if you want a perfect fit and fast installation- buy hella original replacements for 450/pair.
If you have patience, and can deal with aftermarket imperfection- buy these DJAUTO lenses for 200/pair.

go buy yourself some new headlight assemblys you could even install xenon light in it at this time. your lenses should be glued to the base of the head light with hot glue due to a d.o.t. regulation. so i dont believe you can get just the lense
