1995 E320 Need General Advice
Hi:
I am thinking about buying a 1995 E320 station wagon (automatic). It has 110,000 miles and already had repair done to the engine wiring harness and the head gasket. The owner also sealed up the sun roof (I'm glad of that - hate them due to leaks). Apparently there was no major problem, but she was concerned. Owner has all records and well maintained. Only con so far is that the radio doesn't work - and these cars don't get great mpg.
What else should I be asking about?
I want a car that will last at least another 100,000 miles.

I had a 1995 E320 for a few years. I traded it in on a 1999 E320 3 years ago. I should have kept the 1995!
The 95 with the inline 6 was much smoother. I couldn't tell if it was running at idle without looking at the tach.
The 99 has too much electronics, giving me trouble now. I have had window regulator troubles, sunroof troubles. MAF troubles, none of which happened with the 95.
The body style of the 95 suited me better than the streamlined 99.
What makes you think they don't get good mileage? I had the same with it that I have now with the 99: 18 town, 26 hwy average, more or less.
And I could change the spark plugs in 20 minutes!!
If it has been maintained as you say, and the price is fair, go for it.

Well, it's not in as great shape as she thought. I took it to her mechanic, who said the shocks are bad and that there are some (numerous) engine leaks. She hasn't had to add extra oil -- but I'm sure that the head gasket -- which was never replaced afterall -- will have to be, sooner rather than later). Also, sun roof may need to be resealed.
She felt terrible (I know her personally) about the mechanics report and took it to another mercedes place to make sure, then dropped the price to 3.000. I think I"m still going to get it. The engine is running great as is the transmission.
But that head gasket is going to cost a lot.
