RE: 1988 300 SE no start
Hi
I reconnected my crankshaft position sensor and hooked the digital multimeter to the end that usually plugs into the ignition module, set the dial to voltage AC and while cranking the voltage was at the most .5 volts.
I read in your suggestion that it should be between 3.5 and 5 volts, is that the voltage while cranking ? and if my voltage is .5 does that indicate that my crank sensor is bad?
thank you

Hi Sleepwalker
the only washer that I noticed on the crankshaft position sensor was the one that is used with the hex fastener, is that the washer that I can put under the part where the you secure it to the base ? also can you please explain how does the crankshaft position sensor go bad? I believe it is basicaly a wound coil inside the metal casing and connected with a wire to the ignition control module. when the 2 magnet segments in the crankshaft turn, the sensor generate the 3-5 volts. Is the system made so when the sensor goes bad then the ignition system will not work at all ? because I do get sparks to the distributor, and also to the spark plugs, so my question is does it only affect the timing of the spark or it disables the ignition control module?
your help is appreciated.
thank you

figure 32 is the spacer (shim).
it can go bad on many factors that affects it (such as temperature, external forces, deterioration of magnet/coils, etc.)
if the sensor goes bad, the square wave signal that is beig converted by ignition unit is not that square anymore... then the interferrence starts.
it will not disable the EZL (ignition module), but the job of the EZL is only to send the coverted message into the ignition coil.

Hi Sleepwalker,
I ordered a replacement crankshaft position sensor and it is the one made by Bosch, when I opened the box I did not notice any spacer that came with it, anyway I installed it without a spacer and hooked the other end to the ignition module, crank the engine and still no start.
is the spacer the reason that it may not start ? any other item I should check?
your help is appreciated.
