Default "Service in 7900 miles"

A few days ago I bought a '99 E320 with 83,000 miles. When I push the odometer reset button a wrench symbol shows up, and the words "Service in 7900 miles". What service is this?

I've ordered an OBD II scanner and manual, as I have always done my own work, but this is my first M-B. I'll have lots of questions, and appreciate any help!

Have been a contributor to several Alfa forums for years.

Hi Bill,

MB's like yours have an "intelligent" servicing system called ASSYST. Instead of having a service at set intervals the vehicle works out when the vehicle needs to be serviced based on time since last service, mileage covered and other factors. Your handbook should give more details.

The sigle wrench means that the vehicle requires an A type service (2 wrenches = B type service) in 7900 miles time. If you are a very low mileage individual the time to next service is expressed in days rather than miles.

Hope this helps.

Stuart.
