Default RE: "Euro Projector Headlight"

in my case, i did NOT use relays or seperate wiring harness. the OEM HID
uses existing wiring so i did same. I did toss in extra inline fuses for the
heck of it and used 15amps w/o any problems. i may go lower to 10a
just to see if they blow. if not, i'll keep them in there. i try to be very
careful about modding electrics and electronics and err on the safe side.
in this case, i figured that if the orig wiring and harness was good enough
for MB, i'd just reuse them.

had I been performing a retrofit on a 95 Nissan pick up truck, and dropping
in an HID lighting system, i'd definitely go with auxilliary wiring and relays.

Q: are they plug and play?
A: in my case, yes. the HID places a lesser load on the electrical system.
the black box did not detect the Hella ballast as anything different so
presumed the bulbs were intact and functioning properly. there are
some ballasts which appear to the black box as 'bulb out'. this would be the
case had my HID appear to be of such a low load that the black/logic box
thought a bulb was out. about once a quarter I experience this. the fix
would be to bring to dealer to have them activate as HID. too lazy/dont
want to pay them....i'll put up with occasional error msg which I simply
extinguish with press of the button. another way to resolve this would
be to use ballast of different model, eg Denso which seems to be
transparent to the black box as well. too lazy/dont want to pay for them.
i'll press the reset button 3-4x a year. :-)

so the answer to "is it PnP?" needs to be taken in context. I'd then ask
"what components are you using in your HID retrofit project?"

(tnx, K1....for the Depo info. I'll need another for my next project so
will check out your price on them)

p.s. Jeff, I was apprehensive about the retro project. i read everyday posts
from folks who have done this for months...to try and sense its degree of difficulty.
after determining that it was just beyond the PHD level ('push here, dummy!")
I decided to go for it. I bought all the parts and...........it sat on the project bench
for nearly a year! because I was scared to take a $400 headlight shell,
$200 ballasts, $200 projector, and $100 bulbs and to take a Dremel to them.
good lord, what was I thinking?

after about a dozen email exchanges with Zam2000 (infamous on the other
MB boards as the lighting guru......he's done about 3 doz mods of this type
for MBs) I took the plunge and turned on the oven.

now, looking back, i wonder what the fuss was all about. but at the same time,
have no intentions of telling and advising folks that it is something that is clearly
within THEIR capabilities. i just did the best I could to type up the sequence.
you decide if you can do this. having the proper tools is also (obviously) important:

you must have Dremel or roto type cutting tool
- hemostats or needle nose pliers
- good lighting
- good project bench (dining room table, door on sawhorses....) which you can spread
things out for days
- patience. do NOT rush this. no one has a stopwatch on you.
- good variety of flat blades, phillips
- recommend only RTV sealant....no expoxy
- roll of blue masking tape to help mark pieces
- several empty egg cartons to hold small parts
- DVM or VOM which you know how to use for continuity testing
- oven (which I strongly prefer over heat gun) to bake open the
headlamp.....and to close.

helpful....
digital camera so that you can take photos and post if you get in a bind. Zam and I
can view and offer advice. (webcam might be a good idea but I've not used this tool before)

read a lot and absorb from HIDPLANET.COM's "HID Univeristy"

i also have many PDFs i can forward to you to sort through just on E320 HID retrofit
that I pulled off MBWORLD

i actually had a used music stand which i used to position the 'patient' underneath
bright, hanging shop lamp when needed

all this typing has tired me out. i'm going for breakfast......

Hi all, I'm looking at doing this mod to a W210 97 E420 with factory halogen lighting.
There is a supplier in Germany who provides replacement headlight units (LHD) with xenon projectors for USD $429.
Has anybody tried these? Is it possible to retrofit OEM lamp washers?
