CAI, directly below the filter there is a opening which air from outside the car comes in to cool the brakes and is drawn up to the filter. I drove a 60 mile round trip yesterday and when I got home, the filter housing under the heat shield was warm but not hot as the shield or the engine. You noticed the performance gain over 3500 RPM when max torque is reached up to redline. Click on the attachment, then click on the file and you can enlarge the photo for a better look, I am so far very happy with it.

It's in the airstream that goes to the brakes for cooling. It shares the airstream. The air getting to the intake is ambient temperature. If you look closely, you can see that the intake is forward of the brakes.
