Default self dimming mirror

The driverside mirror, which I assume is self dimming, looks like it's loosing it's tinting, there is a clear gap across the top about 1/2". The other day it dropped another 1", but now its back up to where it was previously. It has never turned clear during the day, it just remains the same day and night. I assume that it must have an electrical current that dims and lightens it, just weird though, like it has a liquid, that covers the inside of the glass plate. (98 C230)
