Default rotor replacement

about to replace the front rotors on my 2001 240c. What is the proper way to replace them. What is an acceptable rotor replacement?

Thanks Nick

Default RE: rotor replacement

Nick,

I have a 2001 C240 and just replaced my pads and rotors all the way around. All the parts were OEM replacement not MB. I bought Raybestos pads and I can't remember the name of the rotors but they were a big brand name and were < $40 each. I spent < $250 for all four wheels. I purchased my parts through a local automotive parts chain store and they all fit fine. It took about a week for the order to arrive. I needed two brake wear sensors, one for each front wheel (none on the rear), that I purchased from the MB dealer. Google discount Mercedes Benz parts and you will find pages of suppliers. Beware and check total pricing and manufacturer before you buy. I went with a local because the pricing was best and I knew I would not have a problem with returns or exchanges if I needed.

I used a lot of penetrating oil on the hubs. I believe there is a torx or hex screw that needs to come out of the rotor first. I needed a hammer to remove my rotors but then I got a 4 wheel alignment after I completed the job. I rotated the rotor while hitting it with the hammer. The rear rotors have brake shoes inside the rotors near the hub for the emergency brakes. Getting the rotors off was the hardest part. I had 86,500 miles on the original pads and rotors. The rear pads had another 80K left but I did them so they'll be good until I trade the car. There is a pin holding a spring that keeps the pads in place on the caliper that needs to be carefully driven out with a small drift pin. The total job took about 4.5 hours with the most time getting off the rotors. I don't know if it will help but I cleaned, wire brushed, the hubs and I applied Antiseize to the hubs before I installed the new rotors.

Good Luck,
Bill
