Question Persistent Check Engine Light problem - 1999 C280

Hi all,

I've got a 1999 C280 that has had a persistent glitch that causes the CEL to illuminate, but not consistently. I've noticed no pattern other then noticing that at times of warm startup or shut down it seems to occur more frequently.

Miles are 130,000

I recently replaced my MAF, tried two high-quality Chinese copies (eBay) and eventually settled on an OEM Bosch off a low-mileage wreck. This cleared up my rough shifting issues and now the car runs like new, but still the intermittent CEL.

Codes have been for MAF or secondary fuel system.

The only other issue I have occasionally is a loud ticking that sounds like a lifter but appears to be coming from the air injection pump system but this occurs only on cold start or when idling for long periods.

I have access to a huge pool of cheap junkyard parts. What pieces do you recommend I start swapping?

Any other ideas of what to check?

I'd love to learn what has helped others in similar situations. Thanks.

make sure the rubber hoses coming off the valve covers arent cracked. they can cause similar codes. also check all of your vacuum lines.
