Default Oil Changes

The dealer recommends the first oil change at 25,000 km. The car is brand new and I believe using non-synthetic oil for the break in. I'm not use to going this long without an oil change. Should I bring it in earlier than the scheduled oil change and go with synthetic?

How often do you guys change your oil if the car is pretty new? My car has no dipstick either so everything will most likely be done at the dealership.

Thanks
Ron

I change my oil every 5K miles with Mobil 1. My intervals are 10K miles between changes. I never heard of a 25K mile interval. What model and year?

Sorry I see it is 25K KM and not miles, that make more sense.

The car is brand new. I thought it was definately long for the first oil change. I assume you'd be using the lighter synthetic 5w30 oil from mobil 1?

I'm just curious if anyone actually waits for the dealer maintenance schedule?
I have the c230 sedan that is brand new.

Thanks
Ron

You MUST use synthetic oil if you follow the recommended change interval. Engine damage will occur if you don't. MB forgot to tell its customers this and lost an ugly class-action lawsuit as a result.

yes but what weight in oil are you guys using as it doesnt say in the manual? I would assume on new cars it would be the lighter 5w30
synthetic. I agree I prefer Mobil 1 as well, if Amsoil wasn't so hard to get here.

Did you guys purchase your car brand new? The first oil change is actually at 20,000 km. Just wondering if anyone has waited until then to change the oil?

Thanks
Ron

FWIW, I spoke with MBUSA this morning about oil requirements (2002 W210) and I was told just about any 5W40 oil is suitable, she read off 5 well-known products. She suggested that Mobil 1 0W40 was the factory fill.

All 5W40 oils will be synthetic - - either a blend or a true syn product.

It's not as critical nowadays, but a lot of people still like the first change to be around 500-1,000 miles. It's hard to get rid of old habits and it doesn't hurt anything but your wallet for the first change to be early.

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html Go to this link. It contains everything you'll every need to know about oil for various Mercedes engines. It is up to date also. Find your engine number on the list and it will tell you what oil is approved. Also, what Lugnut said is a truism. Follow his advice also, he is very wise and knowledgeable on such matters. My wife's 04 Hundyai still requires 3K oil changes with dino oil, amazing for today's automobile. If you use the recommend oil and know the climate variants where you live, following the chart on the site I sent, you will be OK. On the chart, MB stands for Mercedes Benz, as it also has BMW and Porsche oil preferences.

So there primary focus is to use an oil that meets 229.3 and 229.5 for cars with FSS? That's how I read it.

Thanks.
