I have a C180 that also makes a strange noise when accelerating above 2000 rpm. Sounds a bit like pre-ignition (pinging? pinking?), but with the "paa paa paa" noise you describe.

I read an old archive in the mercedes mailing list that said most C180s did this and that it was "exhaust resonance" for which Mercedes Benz had no solution.

Perhaps this is your problem, especially when it's in the middle to rear of the car.

Alternatively, it could simply be an exhaust leak somewhere.

Cheers.

Thx ... I actually thought so cz the sound seems not to be a mecanical sound , so it is most probably related to exhaust ... this makes me relax cz it really freaks when u hear it !!

My 95 C280 does that too, I just bought it and I thought it was backfiring, I tool it to my Benz mechanics(I've owned a 190E and a 300E ) and they added that it supposedly needs a wiring harness, . I wonder if this is something they do to all C280's before 97 or how do I know?

Wiring harness??? Is this supposedly something to do with the noise?? Or something extra to have done. What did they say the noice was caused by?

Seems very unlikely. I've owned 6 Benzes and none have ever had any problems with the wiring harnesses.

(Can't say the same about my wife's old Volvo which had "biodynamic, self-decomposing insulation" on all the wires!!! A nightmare!)

Cheers,

I just purchased the car three weeks ago and am changing all neccessary basics, plugs, oxygen sensors, fuel filter, blah, blah, blah. I have an error code stating my fuel mixture is too rich. My mechanic says I also need a wiring harness to really evaluate my problem regarding the way the car shakes in idle and hesitates upon accelatering. The noise seems to be coming from the middle of the vehicle and happens when I accelerate rapidly. I plan to do the Oxy. sensors and and fuel filter this weekend to see if it helps. I am certainly happy with my purchase as I have owned a 300E and a 190E and like the looks of the C280 better. I will keep you posted.

Seems like we're all experiencing a similar problem, although I can't say my car is shaking etc. - just makes the pinging noise in the centre of the car when I accelerate.

As I rode into work this morning on my bike, a C180 identical to mine accelerated into the traffic and made the same noise as mine! As we say in the I.T. industry "Perhaps it's a feature, not a bug!"

Cheers.

I'm beginning to wonder if other car owners pay this much attention to their vehicles, my husband thinks I'm a little crazy cuz my obsessionMercedes Benz. Our other vehicle is a 97 Camry and a boring car it is , not many things have went wrong on it. My argument for MB has not been so convincing to him lately which I conclude that I love my car like my kids, I overlook their weaknesses and focus on their highlights .
