Default Low power - engine cutting/missing

Hello – hope someone can help!
1997 C230e
Problem – Reduced power and failing to rev over 4200rpm.
This started a year ago. Runs fine at idle and accelerates smoothly (when stationary) up to 4200rpm - then the engine starts cutting then immediately runs again when holding throttle down. It is not like ‘rough running’ – it sounds like an instantaneous ‘cut’ and restart as if the ignition was turned off and on again every second. There is no backfire when it does this.
Emissions are very good (low).
The car runs fine as long as I don’t try to accelerate hard and 4k rpm is not exceeded. If I try to ‘load’ the engine it dies and I have to lift my foot and then increase power more slowly.
From various sources of advice – I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, air mass meter.
Car was put on a Delphi DS100 diagnostics machine which gave two fault codes –
1- 050 – Idle Adaption – Adaption too Lean
2- 084 – Idling/Part Load Adaption Short Break – Adaption Limit Exceeded
Short Term Fuel Trim (FT) Max Value. Idle Speed/Part Load

The car idles perfectly! No adjustments have ever been made to throttle body.

I’m not working now due to a stroke and cannot afford now to give it to my local Merc dealer, so any advice would be VERY gratefully received!!!

Mass air flow sensor. I just had this problem on my 98 C230, almost to a T of what your problem is.. I don't know if your model is OBDII or not, but if it is, My code was P0170. (among others) I replaced the MAS and it's like a new car.
I would look in the forum here for a Throttle position sensor repair allso. I just read one and the symptoms were not quite like this, but close.

Does the same thing happen when you drive? The engine may have RPM limit (ECM cuts off fuel - I guess to prevent damage) when car is stationary. On my 02 C230, you can't rev it past 4200rpm when standing, but while driving goes to redline "in no time".

Hi Rodcam, I have the same problem with my SLK, did you ever get it sorted out?
People keep telling me it's the air flow meter but you say that you've changed yours and it didn't work.
