Intermittent AC operation

Intermittent AC operation
I have a 280C with 30,000 miles. The air conditioner began working intermittently, and now it just blows hot. Before it stopped working all together, you could turn it off and on, and it would blow cold air as if it were new.
I do not think this is a freon problem, but maybe electrical. Anyone have experience with this issue? Thanks!

RE: Intermittent AC operation
Okay, I read in a previous post that you can force the compressor on by pressing <REST> and <EC> at the same time. However, when I do this, I get what appears to be an error code that flashed on the climate control screen. The code is 01 and the alternates to 88F until I reset the ignition. Is anyone familiar with this error?

RE: Intermittent AC operation
Not sure about the year of your car, but it sounds like you entered the Diagnostic mode which shows the actual values. I believe the 01 is your in-car temperature. Post the year/ model and we may be able to help you out.

RE: Intermittent AC operation
I have a 1996 C280 with 156000 miles. My A/C was working fine about a week ago. Today I turned it on it only blows cool air. I check the compressor and it seems to be working fine because the clutch is angage as a good sign that there is enough freon in the system probably no leak. I am thinking that the indash climate control switch is the guilty party there. Does anyone have any idea on what is going or have any experience with that kind of problem. Any help will be greatly apreciated

RE: Intermittent AC operation
You probably read my old post about fixing a constant EC light. I am not sure exactly what car you have, but I got the same flashing, however it did allow me to charge the system properly by forcing the compressor to turn on. Post what model and year you have along with whether it's single climate control or dual climate control.
Thanks,
FA

RE: Intermittent AC operation
I read a previous post stating that one of two temperature sensors could be the problem. One is located near the compressor, and the other one under the dash. Can anyone elaborate on how I can test if these sensors are bad? Thanks.

RE: Intermittent AC operation
All I can tell you is that I just replaced them both, because somewhere in internet land I found a service bulletin that said to replace both of the sensors. They are not very expensive or difficult to replace so I would say just do both of them.

RE: Intermittent AC operation
It turned out the AC system was just low on Freon -- it only had 25lbs. Apparently the sensors we talked about will prevent the compressor from kicking on at 25lbs and below. I added a bottle of R12 from advanced autoparts and that brought the pressure back up to 40. The AC is working like new, except I probably have a leak somewhere in my system.
