General Maintenance

Hey guys, long time lover of the site, but my first post.
I have a 2001 C-240 with 82k, my first MB, and starting to see signs of “minor” fixes in the future. Just had a service B done where I learned that I need an oil gasket, belt tensioner pulley and shock, and some front end suspension work (control arms). My question is, should I be going to the MB dealer to get pretty much everything done on this car, or is it safe to have a local foreign auto mechanic to do this stuff? The dealer was quoting me close to $4,000 for the work, where a local shop quoted me less than half that.
Also, regarding general maintenance as well, is it safe to get the fluids changed at anywhere other than the dealer? I mean does the dealer use the only break fluid, coolant, tranny fluids, etc., approved for these cars, or are they comparable to what some service stations can do? $175 for new break fluid seems kinda pricey. Some input from you long time Mercedes lovers would be greatly appreciated. I love the car and plan on keeping it, and will definitely be buying another someday. So I want to start getting to know them on a “more intimate level.” I guess just from the experience of you all, what would you recommend?
Thanks!

Runaway from the Stealership. There's a reason why they call them thieves!
You can do all the fluid changes yourself.
If your not up to the challenge, then the local independent can help you with that too.
Establish a relationship with him and if he is good, use him repeatedly. He'll teach you a lot about the MB style of life.
