Default C240 Estate roller blind, over-engineered

The roller blind on my 2005 C240 Estate (the window shade-like part that rolls out to cover the cargo area) broke. Specifically, a 3" metal pin broke which anchors the extended cover in place. This is at best a $0.50 part and is totally replaceable, but MB tells me that the entire cargo cover (which includes the pull-up pet net) needs to be replaced at a cost of $1040.00 US.

Is it me, or has this part been totally over-engineered? My friends 1991 TE has a cargo cover that still works perfectly, yet my 2005's has failed and with no hope of repair? Has anyone else experienced this?

Since it's an interior part, I'm looking for one from a totaled W203, but they're hard to find. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
