Default C230...sputter

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum and new to owning a Mercedes. Bought my first Mercedes last week. It's a used 2003 C230 with 45k miles on it. Most of the time it runs and feels great, however, every now and then when i come to a stop it will sputter a little bit (almost feels like it is going die). After a few seconds (5 to 10) it settles back into a nice idle. It does this with or without the air cond. on. It does not do it all the time and I would say it occurs about everythree or fourstops (fast or slow stops). At first I thought it might be some condensation in the fuel line but I do not know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

I thought it might be water in the fuel line as well. But after a lot of research, I think it might either be a airflow sensor or I may need to get the computer upgraded with a newer program.

we will see.

Mass air sensor comes to mind. hears somthing to try.. Takethe air cleaner out and blow out the element and all the junk in the box. Before doing so put a rag in front of the mass air so you don't get dirt on the sensor or in the intake..dont forget to remove rag.... put that all back together. Take the plug off the mass air sensor and put dielectric grease on the contacts unless you have access to contact enhancer (recommended).
Tried this with one with a similar concern last week and I couldn't reduplicate it again and hasn't returned.
I'm assuming your idle is dropping below normal and feels like it is going to stall. Another posability is you have a slight misfire. How many miles of the vehicle? Also have had 1 or 2 throttle actuators bad not knowing how far to close.
Just a few things to try and a couple other poss.

It ended up needing new #2 and #5 wires. Runs like a champ now.

Hi, I'm new to.

My 2004 C230 1.8K recently had a similar problem and I suspected 02 or MAF. It turned out to the Check Valve Purge system. Mercedes dealers routinely change some plastic stems on this durin their "A" and "B" services. The labor was a heart stopping 6hr!!! as they had to remove supercharger to install. My car symptons where idle up and down at stop and almost bucking when in gear. I have the automatic. Start simple but let a shop with a STAR diagnostic ck. it out. I wish you luck.

Hey pt145ss,

I have the same problem. I am going to try air sensor as well as the wires. Where are the wires? and where did you buy? How much?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

Listen up, there is a recall to have the PCV hose/ valve changed on all 1.8 K models. Complete with loaner cars. If you own one 2003, 04, 05 get it now. Mercedes does'nt do this stuff often.
