Hi can anyone out there help me ,i have a 2005 Merc 220 diesel with 70.000miles
on the clock A couple of weeks ago i was having starting problems ,i thought was a weak battery .
I managed to start the car with leads ,but that evening with the car parked up engine off and no keys in the ignition i smelled burning and then saw smoke coming from the engine ,i opened the bonnet but was shocked to see flames rising from the back of the engine slightly left of the battery .
I managed to put the fire out before it took hold properly.
The car has been inspected by Mercedes who do not know the cause ,however the car is being repaired by my insurance company.
Can anyone please tell me if they may have had similar problems with this model
or could this be a one off problem.

Hello I am new here this is my first post.
I hope you got an answer to this issue already but I may be able to help.
I have been a Fireman for 22 years and have been to many car fires.
The only way for a fire in the engine compartment is hot fuel vapour igniting due to an electrical fault (short circuit) Petrol or Derv will not ignite on a hot manifold
