A/C Compressor failed
Has anyone had their A/C compressor fail on a 1999 C280? I can;t believe it. I thought I had just run low on charge. I had AC in the morning at at noon nothing. It just stopped. Took it to dealer and find the compressor was shot! THese things are ridiculously expensive. I think the AC compressor for home central cooling is cheaper. This thing was $1000.
OK I am done now. But has anybody had this. The tech said it was pretty rare.

RE: A/C Compressor failed
I replaced the entire A/C assembly last summer (compressor, etc.) and cost me close to $1300. The A/C had been working fine, then all of a sudden it started making a grinding noise, then a day later it was shot.
After everything is replcaed, it still doesnt work when its really hot out, its bi-polar it seems, and no one knows how to fix it.

sometimes it make sense to get those extended warranty thing. same thing as going to casino once.

Burned light bulb in the cluster ($170), rust stains on the headliner (got quote of $900 just to inspect it), cracked molding on the tailgate.

Since you are'nt on warranty, have you considered a competent independent garage? On a small repair I priced, an independent garage was less than half the price of the dealership.
Regarding extended warranties: I've looked into several and decided unless one is exclusionary (listing the parts NOT covered, while everything else is covered-similar to "bumper-to-bumper) then the company can make the case that a non-covered part caused the problem and therefore they won't pay. That said, most warranties I considered covered the A/C compressor. But will they use new OEM parts? Probably remaned parts.

I had it done at a Mercedes garage. I dont know the exact ammount, but I had it all replaced.
Im not sure if they coded anything? Its just very random, and doesnt like hot/humid & extra sunny weather.
