remove fuse 27, 29, and 31 for testing the driver's side. (one or two of the fuse is not available depending on model)

remove fuse 34, 38 and 40 for testing the passenger's side. (one or two of the fuse is not available depending on model)

if you have an multimeter, you can immediately tell the result by checking the current consumption.

remove the negative cable of the battery and attach the ammeter in series.

observe the reading. normal current consumption is about between 0.04 to 0.08 ampere. 0.1 is acceptable too.

remove the suspected component's fuse and lock the car.

wait 2 minutes till sleep mode.

Thanks sleepwalker. Unfortunately, I was involved in an accident this past week and now my car is in the repair shop. I know they won't fix the battery drain, but I am hoping they will think the clunking noise was caused by the accident. I will try the multimeter reading whenever I get the car out of the repair shop...at least they are using all genuine mercedes parts!! Thanks again, and I will keep you posted. Thank you for all the great advice!!

Sleepwalker, we tested the consumption prior to removing an fuses and the consumption was 0.078 which within your range this would be acceptable, correct? If so, does that mean that it is possible that the problem was the old battery? We replaced the mercedes battery with a battery from NAPA auto parts. However, after my accident, the body shop replaced that battery with a stock mercedes battery. Could the NAPA battery have been too low of voltage?

Also, the clunking noise in the front end seems to be only coming from the driver's side. You can almost feel the clunking on the floor by the pedals. We are thinking of trying to replace the sway bar bushings. The body shop replaced the sway bar links which seemed to have made the clunking a little better...only makes the noise if I hit a bump on the road with the steering wheel straight. If I hit a bump with the wheels turned it doesn't do it. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

normal consumption.

check the battery. it must have an internal short/leak/drain.

I will be attempting to replace the sway bar bushings this weekend. Does anyone have any experience in replacing these and if so, can you please offer some advice and possibly a diagram of some sort? Do you have to take off the whole sway bar? Any help in addition to Lugnut's posting would be greatly appreciated!!!
